A local resident shared her terrifying experience, recounting the sound of an incoming projectile that prompted her to seek shelter under her market stall. “I saw smoke, people screamed, a woman was crying,” she said.
The history of Donetsk goes back to 2014 when Russian-backed forces took control of the city and surrounding areas in eastern Ukraine. Since then, Moscow has maintained partial control over the region. The recent shelling adds to the longstanding tensions in the area.
